Going Down with a Fight

Kennedy Cougar’s varsity volleyball team took on the Johnston Dragons on Oct. 23 and didn’t go down without a fight. The match went on for five sets, Kennedy won two sets and Johnston won three. “It was a heated game.” Shayla Dralle, a junior on Kennedy’s varsity team shared. The whole game went on for two and a half hours and was completed at 9:20pm with a two-hour drive back. The match was called the ‘Regional Semi-Finals’ and if they won this won they would have gone to the ‘Semi-Finals’. This was the Cougars final game of the season and was very back and forth.  Dralle also shares that the “refs weren’t making good calls” and it got pretty emotional.
In first match, the Johnston Dragons won the first set, 20-25. In the second match Kennedy made a come back with a score ending in 25-22. The Cougars also won their third set with the score of 25-22. Only needing one more win to make it to the semi-finals Kennedy tried to up their game, but the Dragons beat them too it, winning the fourth set, 15-25. Now both teams only needed one more win, to win the whole game. The Dragons became ‘cocky’ and kept getting under some of our players skin. “There was a lot of crying,” Dralle expressed. The final set ending with Dragons winning 15-9 and Kennedy being kicked out of the semi- finals. “It was really sad, but we put up a really good fight, and came a long way from the beginning of the season. I wouldn’t have wanted to go down any other way.” Dralle added.
All-in-all the Cougars had a great season and experienced lots of wins and losses. Of course, they would have liked to have made it to state but they are proud with how far they have come.

  1. I like how this pertained to Kennedy directly, and it really felt like something I would have read in Torch. Nice job.

  2. I haven't seen one person write about an actual sporting event, play, etc. that has recently happened at school. I really liked seeing this sort of different perspective of what's been going on around school. Well done!

  4. I liked how you wrote about a sporting event that recently occurred. I found it fun to read, and felt that you had a good flow in this piece, that just made it all come together. I feel like this is an article that could actually be in the school newspaper.

  5. I like how you wrote about an actual sporting event and the title caught my eye. Your quotes were amazing and I can't exactly complain about much. This is something I would have seen in the sports section of a newspaper and not on a student blog.

  6. I like your article a lot, but a few distracting punctuation issues (namely near the quotes) took away from the experience.

The volleyball team put up a good fight, so at least the semi-finals won't have ended with a flop!

  7. I really liked this piece! It was unique and engaging. The quotes were chosen very well. The only advice for improvement I would give you is to make sure you're punctuating your quotes correctly (you used periods where you should have used commas to connect the quote to the tag) and avoid sentence fragments and comma splices (I only noticed one or two of each, which is fairly good).

  8. I like your lead, it adds a lot of tension which shows us how the game felt. If that makes any sense... LOL
