Kennedy For the Win

The Kennedy men’s Junior Varsity and Varsity took on a dual header against Iowa City High on Jan. 3, 2018. It was a close meet with a score of 92-76 with Kennedy taking home the win. The number of players were lacking on the opponents side, thus by having Kennedy race only against themselves for some events. Kennedy was behind in the first half, but made a surprising comeback. Kennedy Cougars were also honored for senior night, because it was Iowa City High's last home meet. Synthesis and Reflection

Media Law A new concept for me would be learning what libel and slander was. I always knew slander as "gossiping" and never imagined it as an actual thing people have to look out for. I have already noticed changes in what I'm hearing and figuring out what's slander and what's not. For example Dec. 4, 2018 a rumor went around the school that we were going to have to make a non snow day up. Well later I found out somebody had just made that up and was spreading fake news . I didn't think of it as gossiping anymore, I thought of slander. Libel was different, I always thought of libel as "fake news" and figured they were the same thing. Now I'm aware that a lot of things can be fake news not just written things. Libel is a little more tricky to find because you actually have to search for it. Unlike slander where you could say, "We have a full day of school on Friday," and many people would believe you. I now have to be cautious with th...

Stressed out with GPA

When I see my GPA, my emotions start to twist, whether it’s a good or bad GPA, the lower numbers makes my anxiety spread. When I see a lower GPA, it brings me down and I start to get on myself and think ‘why am I such a bad student?’ It then stresses me out and I can’t think straight, because all I can think about is how low my GPA is. I believe it would be much easier on students and parents if we didn’t have to know our GPA until the end of the semester.               Your GPA is your grade point average and tells you how well you are doing in your classes all together. GPA’s were put in place to document how good of a student you are. But know in days, some people slack on the homework but know the material or know the material but don’t score so well on the test, which goes to show; is your GPA really an accurate representation on how well you do? Am I Doing it Right?

(Interview with Kristina Merritt) “Being a mom, nobody tells you if you're doing it right.” Kristina Merritt, a high school math teacher at Kennedy shares, while talking about her home and school life. Living with her husband Adam, not to mention her three boys; Brody (8), Cade (4), and Knox (7 months). Life at home can be a bit overwhelming. Some days it can be hard to be a mother. Merritt is a high school math teacher on the weekdays. She deals with kids all day and only gets a break from 1:16- 2:08 and even then, she takes time to help her students. Being a geometry teacher can be difficult sometimes. Geometry can sometimes be considered one of the ‘hardest’ math classes which means, Merritt must have her work cut out for her. At the end of the day Merritt just wants to go home and hang out with her family. However, it isn't always easy to switch out of ‘teacher mode’. “I wanna be a mom at home, not still [a] teacher.” Merritt says. She doesn't like to bring ...

The match went on for five sets, Kennedy won two sets and Johnston won three. “It was a heated game.” Shayla Dralle, a junior on Kennedy’s varsity team shared.
